Sasha Dines PhD

Co-Director, Logistics, Fundraising, Humpback dolphins

Sasha recently completed her PhD on the acoustic behaviour of the endangered humpback dolphin, including describing their repertoire, investigating  the existence of signature whistles and their potential use in an acoustic mark-recapture framework… stay tuned for updates and papers. We’re happy to report that Sasha is staying on with Sea Search and moving across into a co-Director role helping us expand and keep up with some of the many exciting projects on the horizon.

Sasha, originally from England, holds a first class BSc(Hons) degree in Marine Biology from University of Liverpool where she used acoustic telemetry to study sea bird ecology. Afterwhich she graduated from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in London with an MSc in Wild Animal Biology. Whilst at RVC Sasha spent time assisting the Zoo pathologist and UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Program (CSIP), completing her first dolphin and whale necropsies. For her Masters thesis, Sasha worked at the Zoological Society of London to study social networks in grey reef sharks using acoustic telemetry.

After her studies she spent 3 years at Oceans Research in Mossel Bay, South Africa as their Head Field Specialist. There she managed their marine research internship and helped to grow The Mossel Bay Marine Mammal Stranding Network, before enrolled at Stellenbosch University for her PhD with Sea Search Research and Conservation and joining The SouSA Consortium.   Sasha has now taken on the role of coordinator of the SouSA consortium in South Africa and is also leading the Threats group of the HudoNET network – a reange wide version of SouSA aimed coordinating research across the species range.  Webstie here
