Cetaceans in a Changing Environment

E3C - Effects of Climate Change on Cetaceans

The world’s oceans, including those around Southern Africa have under gone significant changes in the last few decades. Depleted prey resources, depleted top predator numbers, shifts in species distributions, changes in temperature, ocean noise etc. As large, mobile top predators (and some with rapidly recovering populations) – cetaceans have a significant role in ecosystem function. We are using a range of methods to collect data on the distribution and trends of cetaceans in time and space to give us an understanding of who these animals are using and responding to a changing environment.  Led by Simon Elwen and students.
