Charlotte Combrink

MSc Student - Stellenbosch Uni. Fur Seal genetics

Charlotte is one of Sea Search’s MSc students and is pursuing her degree in Zoology though Stellenbosch University, where she also completed her undergraduate and Honours degrees. Her current research investigates the genomic diversity and differentiation of Cape fur seal (Arctocephallus pusillus) colonies in South Africa and Australia, and her Honours research investigated the fine-scale genomic dynamics of Cape dwarf eel grass (Zostera capensis) in the Eastern Cape using genome-wide SNP markers. Charlotte is enthusiastic about exploring population genetic patterns in southern African marine species to the end of applying these patterns to conservation management, and she hopes that her work will contribute to South Africa’s ability to safeguard the genomic diversity of its species for future generations.

Charlotte’s international background (18 yrs in Malaysia, 4 yrs in the United States of America and 4 years in South Africa) instilled in her a deep appreciation for diversity of thought and creative problem solving, which she strives to bring into her work. In her free time she enjoys volunteering in the ranks of the Volunteer Wildfire Services, diving and backpacking.
